Beauty Advisor: Expectations vs Reality

17 Jan 2023 / Artisan People

Our beauty advisor roles are always in high demand, and we’re regularly placing our superstar advisors with leading beauty brands to work at their in-store counters across the UK. But if you have a passion for beauty/makeup and think this role might be for you – either as a permanent career or in a temporary role – do your expectations match with the reality? Let’s compare what you might expect from a beauty advisor role with what you’ll actually find.

Expectation:

I’ll need to be a professional MUA

Reality:

You don’t need formal qualifications or professional MUA experience to start out as a beauty advisor. What you do need is to be passionate about beauty/makeup and offering impeccable customer service as well as the skills to make people look great. If you’ve picked up your skills from online tutorials, that’s OK. Personality is more vital than experience – and we’ll provide all the training you’ll need to ensure you can do the job well. At the same time, if you are an experienced beauty advisor, we can help to supercharge your career. We’ll give you access to highly sought-after roles with the best beauty brands as well as industry-leading training that will keep you in the know about the latest innovations.

Expectation:

I won’t get a job with only influencer experience

Reality:

Many of our beauty advisors started out by sharing their beauty tips and tricks online, and influencers often make great beauty advisors. If you have plenty of useful knowledge to pass on and are confident in advising on colour matching and application, introducing new ideas/products, and providing in-person demonstrations/makeovers, you will be an asset to any brand. Plus, all that training and experience, as well as working in such a vibrant, fast-paced environment, will be very inspirational, allowing you to take your online content to the next level.

Expectation:

It’s all about the sales

Reality:

This is partly true – a beauty brand wouldn’t last long if the staff were just having fun playing with makeup and the tills were gathering dust. Therefore, you will need to be confident and proficient in selling products, and you should expect to have sales targets to meet. However, you’re called a beauty advisor for a reason. Your main goal is to understand what each customer needs and to advise them on the beauty products that will meet those needs – whether that’s the product they came in for or one you introduce them to. If you do that well, the sales will follow.

Expectation:

I’ll have to work fixed 9-5 hours

Reality:

Very few of our beauty advisors work a standard 9-5. Most work in shifts, which makes the role perfect if you need to fit in other commitments such as parenting or studying. Flexibility is key as your hours will vary depending on the store’s opening times, and you will also need to be prepared to work on weekends and bank holidays.

Expectation:

I’ll be stuck working for one brand

Reality:

When you work as a beauty advisor through Artisan People, you can represent different brands; however, you will need training on each brand’s signature looks, fragrance ranges and skincare regimes. The beauty world is made up of a vibrant mix of brands, and each has its own distinct style and personality. However, we find that our clients are one of two types: either the playful, colourful brands such as Mac and Bobbi Brown or the classic, sophisticated brands such as Chanel, Dior and YSL.

We look for people with the skills and personalities that suit one of those types. And we then provide comprehensive training relevant to those types as well as brand immersion training relevant to each specific client, giving our beauty advisors the freedom to work for different brands that match their skillset and personality.

Expectation:

I’ll be paid monthly

Reality:

When you’re temping or doing contract work via Artisan People, you will be paid weekly, and we’ll also take care of all the paperwork, taxes, etc.

Expectation:

I’ll be working for brands no one has heard of

Reality:

When you work with Artisan People, we’ll open the door to temporary or permanent roles with leading household names. Our beauty advisors are regularly recruited to work with the best-known brands in the business such as Dior, Kylie, Bobbi Brown, Clarins, Chanel, Estée Lauder and L’Oréal. If you’ve heard of them, we’re likely working with them!

We’re always looking for individuals with the right qualities to become a great beauty advisor. So if you have the passion and personality, and are well-presented, polite, punctual, adaptable and reliable, contact us today or look at our current vacancies and make being a beauty advisor your reality.
